The Anglet beaches

Eleven beaches, 4.5 km of sand

The ocean is right there. Eleven beaches follow one another over nearly five kilometres, from La Barre to the Cavaliers, the latter a legendary surf spot you can reach on foot. Lifeguarded swimming in summer, long early-morning walks the rest of the year.

The Anglet coast lines up eleven beaches over nearly five kilometres, from La Barre in the north to the Chambre d'Amour. Each has its own character: sheltered and family-friendly for some, open to the rollers for others. From the residence, you reach the sand in a few minutes, towel under your arm.

In summer, the main beaches are lifeguarded and the rescue posts mark out the swimming zones. Out of season, they belong to the early-morning walkers. The nearby Cavaliers beach remains the surfers' meeting point all year round.

Behind the residence, the Chiberta pine forest and lake form a green lung. Perfect for running, walking or cycling away from the sun, just a few strides from the terrace.

Just behind the residence stretches the Lazaret forest, a wood of maritime pines bordered by the Chiberta lake. A true green lung, quiet and shaded, where the air smells of resin and ocean. People come here to run at first light, walk the children or simply catch their breath.

The paths lend themselves as well to walking as to cycling, and join the cycle lanes that run along the coast all the way to Biarritz. A slice of nature between the apartment and the beaches, without ever taking the car.

The Chiberta Golf Course

A legendary links, 1927

Designed by the architect Tom Simpson, the Chiberta Golf Course rolls out its fairways between the pines and the dunes, facing the ocean. One of the most renowned courses on the coast, just minutes from the suite.

Created in 1927 and designed by the British architect Tom Simpson, the Chiberta Golf Course ranks among the finest courses on the Atlantic coast. Its fairways wind between maritime pines, dunes and stretches of water, with the ocean for a horizon: a true Scottish-style links, rare in France.

A driving range, club-house and equipment hire let you play on a whim, whether beginner or seasoned player. A round at first light, with the sea air and the birdsong, remains one of the great pleasures of a stay at Chiberta.

Anglet is one of the high places of European surfing. The Cavaliers spot, a few minutes' walk away, draws surfers from all over the world, and the neighbouring beaches regularly host international competitions. The surf atmosphere is felt everywhere, from daybreak to sunset.

Many schools offer lessons and equipment hire, for a first wave with the family or to make progress. Longboard, bodyboard or paddle: everyone finds their board, guided by instructors who know the coast by heart.

Les HallesMarket

Once a resort of crowned heads, Biarritz has kept its Belle Époque allure. You wander from the Rocher de la Vierge to the lighthouse, from the fishermen's harbour and its little huts to the Grande Plage lined with villas. The town is best discovered on foot, between ocean and architecture.

Les Halles, in the heart of town, gather the best of the local producers: fish, cheeses, cured meats and Basque pastries. Around it, cafés and restaurants invite you to linger through the morning. A must, just minutes from Chiberta.

Bayonne

The gourmet capital

Bayonne is as much to be tasted as visited. Its ham cured over several months, its chocolate houses inherited from the 17th century and its fine tables along the Nive make the town a gastronomic stop in its own right, between half-timbered houses and a Gothic cathedral.

Bayonne

The gourmet capital of the Basque Country, Bayonne is first experienced at the table. Its ham, dried over several months and served in fine slices, made its reputation; chocolate, introduced as early as the 17th century, is still crafted by the artisans of the centre. Add the Ossau-Iraty sheep's cheeses and the Irouléguy wines, and you have a lunch with real character.

The best addresses are tucked into the half-timbered lanes of Petit Bayonne and around Les Halles, where the producers gather each morning. You gladly sit down on the quays of the Nive, in the shade of the Sainte-Marie cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Each summer, the Fêtes de Bayonne dress the town in white and red.

The hinterland & Spain

From La Rhune to San Sebastián

A little further out open up Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its bay, Espelette and its pepper, the Irouléguy vineyards and the little train up La Rhune. On the Spanish side, San Sebastián and its pintxos are only three quarters of an hour away.

Beyond the beaches, the Basque Country gains height. Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its sheltered bay, Guéthary and Bidart clinging to the cliff, then the inland villages: Espelette and its garlands of pepper, Ainhoa, Sare and the Irouléguy vineyards. La Rhune, the emblematic peak, is climbed on foot or by little rack-and-pinion train, for a 360° view over the ocean and the Pyrenees.

The Spanish border is just minutes away. San Sebastián, its Concha bay and its pintxos bars are well worth a day trip, between gastronomy and seafront.
